Professor and clinician

Sorbonne University

Karine Clément, MD, PhD, is a professor of Nutrition at Sorbonne University and a clinician at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris. Since 2002, she has led an INSERM research unit at Sorbonne University, dedicated to understanding the pathophysiology of obesity and related metabolic disorders, with a focus on inter-organ communication (www.nutriomique.org). From 2011 to 2016, she founded and directed the French Institute of Cardiometabolism and Nutrition.

Her early research was instrumental in identifying monogenic forms of obesity, paving the way for medical treatments now available to patients. Her team also investigates how lifestyle and nutritional changes influence gut microbiota, immune function, and tissue remodeling—particularly the role of adipose tissue fibrosis and inflammation in common forms of obesity.

Karine Clément has co-authored over 500 highly cited publications and has received numerous prestigious national and international awards. She is a foreign member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium and actively contributes to several international scientific advisory boards and consortia. She coordinated the EU-funded MetaCardis project (2012–2018), which explored the role of gut microbiota in cardiometabolic diseases, and she currently leads the EIC Pathfinder Nutrimmune project, focused on precision nutrition and immune function in obesity.

She plays a leading role in major professional organizations, including the World Obesity Federation (WOF), the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). She is also the President of AFERO (French Association for the Study of Obesity).

Her scientific contributions have been widely recognized, earning her distinctions such as the Fondation Line Renaud/Loulou Gasté Prize, the Irène Joliot-Curie Prize, the Prix Galien, the Fondation de France (Valade) Prize, and the Jacobaeus International Prize
